Pepsi

I drink it enough that my blood probably has turned to carbonation
Bubbling and tickling against the veins that race through my arms
And legs as I try to wake up and try and withdraw this knife
Cutting through my brain, all the while pleading for the gentle arms
Of my best friend, Caffeine
To lift me out of my sleep and blend into the layers of turkey sandwiches
And salty kettle chips
Artificial sweetener, but oh so real relief
Floods my body when I take the first gulp
Trying to keep my eyes wide through the night
As I type squiggles and dots on electronic billboards
Gleaming through the shadows of my bedroom
Sapphire glaring at the ivory wall behind my nest
How many nights have I stayed awake with this drug
Only for the sole purpose of shooting blood through my eyes
Talking to someone through the invisible veins of the internet
That curve and coil through the sky
All the way to a lone, dark bedroom
Where laughter stifles through another girl's lips
Her eyes just as wide, just as pried open by the sugary sea
We both had to chug down
Oh, how many nights did we let our laughter get the best of us
As the summer showered
And the autumn dared not to show its ugly visage
She and I, sisters not by blood, but by heart
Lose ourselves in the luminescent screen
The stars losing their glow and yet ours would still thrive through the night
When orange and pink touched the sky
The bubbles in the blue aluminum can would have popped
And the liquid had fallen flat
If I already hadn't poured it down my dry throat as if it were my last life line
As the dawn came, we still wrote and wrote
Wrote about people that did not exist
Wrote about a land that was only in our minds
An epic fantasy, a battle with no end
It was when the midsummer's day bled through the window
Like hands trying to slam over my eyes
And beg for the darkness of night to return
My muscles jump every time I say 'goodbye' and fall flat
On lavender lakes of cotton and wool
Dreams ship out to sea
My skull light
As if bubbles are filtering to the top
Like a new glass of Pepsi
I'll pour tomorrow.
